Policy Change and You
One of LiveWell Colorado’s key strategies is policy change – at the local, state and national levels. As the Colorado legislative session kicks off in January, this important strategy will become a top priority. Throughout the session, we will actively engage in legislation that promotes access to healthy eating and physical activity in Colorado; and you are critical to our success.
In fact, we are excited to announce that legislation initiated by LiveWell Colorado, SB10-106 – Concerning the Creation of a Food Systems Advisory Council, has been introduced. The bill establishes a Colorado Food Systems Advisory Council, a diverse body that will advise the advancement of healthy food access policies.
This state-sanctioned Council will work across sectors—engaging government, agriculture, business, and non-profit organizations—to collaboratively establish platforms for coordinated action that will support sustainable, local, healthy food systems in Colorado.
Motivated by the recommendations of our recently commissioned Food Policy Blueprint and the CDC’s September 2009 State Indicator Report on Fruits and Vegetables, this bipartisan measure is sponsored by Senator Bob Bacon (D) and Representative Marsha Looper (R).
If you’d like to be involved in our policy work, please visit www.livewellcolorado.org/advocacy. In this newly bolstered section of our website, you can stay informed about the legislation we will be following and get involved by joining our grassroots advocacy network (GAPP).
I encourage each of you to help us make a positive difference in Colorado during this legislative session. Together, we can ensure that every Coloradoan has opportunities for healthy eating and active living in the places they live, learn, work and play.
Live Well!
