Colorado schools serve 63.9 million lunches and 22.7 million breakfasts, and two recent policy and standards changes aim to help ensure kids are able to access healthy food at school…

Back to school: improve safe routes in your community

Now that school is back in session, students across the state are walking and biking to class with additional support from House Bill 1301, Safe Routes to School Funding, which was signed into law this past summer. This program aims to increase the number of children walking and biking to school, promote safety and reduce traffic congestion around schools. As a result of to HB 14-1301’s passage, $700,000 is now available for non-infrastructure (education, encouragement and enforcement) projects to be implemented in 2015. Research has shown the most successful way to increase bicycling and walking is...

Community connectors ensure population- and place-based solutions in Westwood

Westwood is a working-class, predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in southwest Denver. Home to many families, safety is a both a major concern and an obstacle to healthy behaviors in the community. Westwood Unidos is a community-based organization committed to improving the neighborhood and increasing safety by training resident leaders to take action on issues that matter to them and their fellow residents. Working with many partners, Westwood Unidos empowers the people who are most invested in improving the community: the residents who live there...
