Message from LiveWell Colorado's President & CEO

It was with great excitement that I joined LiveWell Colorado on Aug. 11 as the organization’s new president and CEO. In my first month on the job, I’ve had the privilege of listening to what it is that we, as an organization, do well and how we can do better in advancing the healthy eating, active living movement within our state.

I'm learning much already from valuable time with LiveWell community coordinators and funders at our quarterly meeting, community visits in Colorado Springs and Oak Creek (kudos and gratitude to Mina Liebert and Barb Parnell and the coalitions they've developed) and conversations with numerous civic and business leaders. There is enormous currency...

In partnership with the Colorado Farm to School Task Force and Spark Policy Institute, LiveWell Colorado is co-hosting a series of farm to school training webinars. Mark Your Calendar for Childhood Obesity Awareness Month in September

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity has more than tripled in Colorado with 1 in 4 kids in Colorado considered to be overweight or obese. If we continue at this rate, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. The good news? Childhood obesity can be prevented. Communities, health professionals and families can work together to create opportunities for kids to eat healthier and be more physically active. We can all use September to raise awareness about the obesity epidemic and show people how they can take steps toward a solution.
Here are just a few ideas...

Residential Food Sales Boost Produce Consumption in Low-Income Neighborhoods

LiveWell Colorado was happy to support a zoning change that went into effect in Denver on June 20 allowing residents to sell their homegrown, fresh produce and “cottage foods” from their own kitchens. Cottage foods are certain types of low-risk, unrefrigerated items such as honey, spices, jams, eggs, nuts and dehydrated produce. The state of Colorado passed a Cottage Foods Act in 2012 which allows the sale of residentially grown produce and cottage foods, but until this summer, Denver had not passed the changes necessary to implement the practice. Allowing for the residential sale of homegrown produce and products supports healthy food consumption and...

Recreation Programs Build Physical Fitness and Community in Bent County

Over the past year, Bent County, a rural community in southeastern Colorado, has been working to encourage its citizens to be physically active in their own community and support local businesses, while striving to appeal to potential visitors and residents. With a dispersed population, only 55% of the population in the county has adequate access to locations for physical activity according to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation County Health Rankings. The county recognized an opportunity to improve access to physical activity and is leveraging LiveWell Colorado’s $100,000 investment in 2014 to support recreation initiatives...
