LiveWell-PrideLike so many others, we were saddened and horrified at the news from Orlando where an LGBTQ nightclub was attacked, on Latin night, by a lone gunman. As we continue to develop our efforts to eliminate health disparities among all Coloradans and work to remove barriers to healthy lifestyles, we recognize that for Colorado’s diverse LGBTQ community, violence and safety concerns are significant barriers to health. According to the FBI, roughly 20 percent of hate crimes committed in the US are carried out against LGBTQ-identified people and surveys show that more than half of LGBTQ-identified Americans worry about becoming victims of such crimes. A four-year study conducted by the National Coalition of Antiviolence Programs also reported that, among the LGBTQ community, trans women and LGBTQ people of color experienced the greatest risk of homicide.

LiveWell Colorado reaffirms its commitment to working with diverse communities across our state. We extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this senseless massacre.
