Food insecurity is a major issue in Colorado. Eleven percent of Coloradans live in poverty and 13.6 percent of households report food insecurity. Many rely on food assistance programs like SNAP (food stamps). However, SNAP recipients get just $1.41 per meal, making it a challenge to afford enough food—particularly fresh, healthy food—for the month. That’s why Double Up Food Bucks increases access to healthy, locally grown food for low-income Coloradans. When SNAP customers spend a $1 on any SNAP-eligible item, they receive $1 for Colorado-grown fruits and vegetables, up to $20 every visit at participating locations.

Double Up Food Bucks is a threefold win: It allows low-income Coloradans on SNAP (food stamps) to double the amount of fruits and vegetables they bring home, provides new sales for family farmers and local producers, and keeps food dollars circulating in local communities. Since 2016, the program has been implemented at more than 90 locations in 28 counties—but we need your help to continue to reach even more Coloradans in need.
