LiveWell Montezuma began in 2008 with the mission to collaborate with community stakeholders and improve the health of Montezuma County residents by increasing access to healthy, nutritious foods and opportunities for a more active lifestyle. Coalition members want Montezuma County to become a model community where healthy lifestyles are accessible, valued, and practiced. Coalition partners include the Southwest Farm Fresh Cooperative, Montezuma School to Farm, local governments, and the Montezuma-Cortez, Dolores, and Mancos school districts.
The coalition initially focused its work in schools, partnering with local school districts to increase access to nutritious meals for students. In 2011 this emphasis on food access led to an additional focus on revitalizing the local food system by building the capacity of local producers to sell their products to schools, restaurants, and other organizations in the area.
